The site’s Timken Manufacturing Operating System (TMOS) embeds safety, quality, and delivery into daily management through leader standard work, visual controls, and a robust andon response system. BMW Spartanburg hosted one of OpExChange’s marquee plant visits, welcoming 48 participants from 33 manufacturing and distribution companies across South Carolina. Attendees toured the highly automated body shop and engaged directly with BMW leaders on Lean Six Sigma and daily management. The visit offered rare insight into how a global OEM aligns people, technology, and systems to drive consistency, quality, and continuous improvement at scale.

Michelin has developed a world-class maintenance training program focused on building critical technical skills and strengthening long-term workforce retention. Through a partnership with SCMEP and the South Carolina Department of Commerce, this “Talents for Manufacturing” program is now available to manufacturers across the state. Recently, OpExChange participants from twenty companies experienced the program firsthand through in-depth overviews and hands-on workshop tours at Michelin. The training emphasizes real-world scenarios, with nearly 75% of the time spent applying skills at the workbench. This practical approach equips maintenance professionals with the confidence and capability to perform when it matters most.

OpExChange members toured Otis Elevator’s Florence plant, exploring three years of automation and Industry 4.0 initiatives. Fourteen robots have been deployed, reducing labor needs, eliminating errors, and boosting safety. Visitors also learned about connected equipment dashboards, a digital twin for process simulation, and plans for a fully SMART factory by 2025. Lean practices, visual management, and workforce engagement were highlighted throughout the tour.
